メタセシス反応は1990年代に入って優れた触媒が開発されたことから飛躍的な発展を遂げ、現在は有機合成の重要な手法として、高分子合成、医薬品・農薬の製造などに広く利用されています。

今年3月に全3巻で刊行される本書 Handbook of Metathesis, 2nd Edition は、このメタセシス反応に関する総合的な参考書で、2003年に出版された初版を大幅に改訂したものです。初版は当分野の「バイブル」として高く評価されましたが、今回の改訂では最近十年間の新展開を反映し、内容の80%以上を更新しました。特に産業界における応用面での発展を重視しており、網羅性・質の高さにおいて類書を圧する充実した参考書となっています。

その質の高さを保証するのが、旧版に続いて編者として中心的な役割を担ったRobert H. Grubbs教授（カリフォルニア工科大学）の存在です。Grubbs教授は、オレフィンメタセシス反応のための「グラブス触媒」の開発に成功し、2005年にノーベル化学賞を受賞した当分野の世界的権威です。そのほか、各章の著者にも当分野を代表する化学者が名前を連ねています。
